Best answer:

Before the French Revolution, France was low on funds due to the wars and expenditures decided of its ruling class. Most of the money in France belonged a handful of nobles, who also had the majority vote in government decisions. Meanwhile peasants and working class citizens bore most of the consequences of those decisions, and received little benefit from them. Threatened with even more decisions made for them without their consent and the possibility of a military coup, the people began to revolt, leading to the Reign of Terror and the execution of hundreds of the elite, including the king and his wife.
